Ewok Furis the strange moniker of a german-based bedroom producer whose hazy, tropical lo-fi tracks have just reached me this afternoon. It was one of our dear readers who advised me to listen to his songs.
Especially the dreamy “moving to antarctica sounds quite ok” (part of his new EP Television Summer) really grabbed my attention. Download Ewok Fur’s entire EP over at bandcamp for free and show him some love on Facebook!
Consisting of Matt Murillo (guitar, vocals) and Kelly Norman (drums, vocals), The Maxines is a garage-rock two piece from Olympia, WA. So far, they’ve only released a little EP with four songs via the small but lovely vinyl label La-Ti-Da Records. (You can listen to the four songs here)
Now the two are about to release a new EP called Drugstore, which will be available on K Records on January 24, 2012. Check out their brand of “primitive-fuzz-boom-bip” right now and show them some love on Facebook!
Good old Pitchfork pointed me out to Olympia based four-piece Milk Music. The band is to be located somwhere in the grungy spheres between Dinosaur Jr. and the Meat Puppets. They haven’t released anything so far, except for a mostly unnoticed 6 song LP called Beyond Living last year.
I wonder how it could happen, that this band didn’t get more attention, especially in the course of the big Yuck and 90ies-rock hype. Below I’ll give you some songs off their only release and there’s a nice session they did at New Jersey’s WFMU this summer. There’ll be more to come, maybe they even manage to create an internet presence (as they don’t have anything likely so far)!
To be honest, I’ve never heard of this project before, although it’s said that they’ve released around ten things in the last two years. One of their singles, the trashy “Too Safe” was even produced by Jack White himself and released on his Third Man Records. PUJOL is the moniker of Nashville based Daniel Pujol and his band, who extremly catchy, high-energy garage rock.
Watch out for further releases of these guys, mainly their full-length debut Nasty, Brutish, And Short, out October 18 via Saddle Creek.
Jelly Jells is the half African American, half Italian son of a prostitute. He is a musician, magician, inventor, aesthete, dreamer, doer and believer.
This what you find having a look at the “about”- section on Jelly Jellstumblr. It seems like this New York – based musician didn’t have an easy live when he was young. Listening to his songs this impression gets reinforced.
Jelly Jells sings and raps about his problems from the past: The absence of a legit father figure, domestic abuse, and a schizophrenic mother. But if you now expect depressing tunes you’re definitely off base. Jelly’s songs are riddled with reggae influences, hip-hop and a lot of hope and optimism. A mixture you don’t find every day. BOYis the new project of Zurich, Switzerland born singer Valeska Steiner. Consisting of her and her Hamburg based friend Sonja Glass, BOY are maybe one of the most exciting new acts in Switzerland.
Listening to their buoyant pop songs you might slightly be reminded of Feist, but you can also here the two girls’ affection for Scandinavian songwriters as Nina Kinert and the like. You can be sure that BOY will succeed with their music, it’s just too satisfying.
Their debut album Mutual Friends is going to be released September 2nd via Grönland Records. It features well-known musicians just as Helgi Jonsson (Sigur Ros) and Thomas Hedlund (Phoenix).
It’s quite a rare but nice thing to discover a band through a b-side of theirs. It happened to me when I heard Cuckoo Chaos‘ “Jamb Song” last month, a song that is part of their Jesus Flag American Fish 7”(out now via Lefse Records).
After having heard this amazing track I also listened to the a-side and today to another cut called “Just Ride It”, also part their upcoming debut album Woman. Just these three songs are enough to tell you that these 5 San Diego boys have immense potential. I’m sure they will deliver a great debut record.
So if you’re a fan of jangly and twitchy indie pop of either Vampire Weekend or Fool’s Gold, make sure to check these guys out. Also show them some love on facebook!
Woman will be out September 13 on lovely Lefse Records.
